Product Details
These authentic pre-war tubular steel lounge chairs, designed by Paul Schuitema around 1933 and produced by D3, belong to the formative years of modernist furniture design. Original pieces from the 1930s are increasingly hard to come by - especially as a matched pair.
The design reflects the ideals that were spreading through the Bauhaus movement at the time: furniture stripped to its essentials, industrial materials used with clarity and purpose, and a focus on comfort through form rather than ornament. The continuous steel frame gives the chairs their unmistakable flow, a hallmark of early European modernism.
These two chairs remain in near original condition. Only the upholstery has been redone in the 1960s. The tubular chrome frames are remarkably well preserved for furniture from the 1930s, showing only minimal wear. The armrests are made from bent beechwood, finished in black, and have not been repainted. The seat and back still contain the original springs, exactly as they once left the workshop. On request we can have the pair reupholstered professionally.
Signs of age and use are present, but their overall condition is well above what is typically found. Structurally sound and still very comfortable and suitable for everyday use.
Schuitema’s tubular steel furniture is quite rare as the D3 company existed only until 1935. This no 55. model is represented in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, underscoring its importance within Dutch modernist design.
A seldom-seen opportunity to acquire a pair of authentic early D3 lounge chairs with untouched surfaces and exceptional chrome.

About Paul Schuitema

Schuitema was a pioneering Dutch photographer, filmmaker, and graphic designer, who in the 1930s also turned his attention to designing a selection of tubular steel chairs.

Educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam, Schuitema began his career as a painter before moving into graphic and industrial design in 1925. Alongside contemporaries Piet Zwart and Gerrit Kiljan, he helped shape the Dutch movements of Nieuwe Fotografie (New Photography) and Nieuwe Typografie (New Typography), both rooted in the clarity, directness, and functional thinking that also underpinned the Bauhaus ethos. His approach to furniture followed the same principles: honest materials, visible construction, and an emphasis on utility over decoration.
