Product Details
A striking Dutch Art Deco pedestal table in solid oak, dating from the 1920s and executed in the expressive manner of the Amsterdam School.
The design is centred around an octagonal top, framed by a finely carved wooden pearl rim. This beaded detail continues down the outer edges of the supports, giving the table a refined decorative rhythm. Below, four tall oak panels rise from stepped feet in a cruciform arrangement, while their inner edges curve inward to form a dramatic open centre. That contrast between solid planes and shaped negative space gives the piece its distinctive silhouette.
Viewed from different angles, the table shifts beautifully between stricter geometry and softer movement. The stepped base grounds it, while the pearl detailing lends it an unusual look.
The table has been lightly restored and and is in very stable and sturdy condition, ready for use as a pedestal for sculpture, ceramics, a lamp or a plant.
An elegant Dutch Art Deco/ Arts & Crafts piece, with strong sculptural character and a beautifully resolved design.
Background information Amsterdam School
''The Amsterdam School'' stands for the Dutch architectural movement that flourished between 1910 and 1940. The movement influenced other art forms and furniture designs. Some characteristics of the Amsterdam School include: expressionist and organic shapes, decorative sculptural elements and a focus on craftsmanship.
The Amsterdam School movement is seen as a very important chapter in Dutch architectural history and to this day a very recognizable and beloved style worldwide.
It embodies several contradictions. It is an architecture that is instantly recognisable yet difficult to define. It celebrates the communal and the social yet gives almost infinite room for individual expression. It can look hyper-modern yet curiously medieval. And, at its most creative, it can be utterly, infectiously bizarre.
Amsterdam School architects designed a lot of exteriors and interiors in Amsterdam, but the style spreaded further all around the Netherlands. The Hague has its own variant, called The Hague School.
