An elegant and finely crafted 19th-century chess table, circa 1870, likely of German or Central European origin. Petite in scale yet rich in detail - measuring just 67 cm in height and 30 × 30 cm at the top, its scale suggests a refined domestic use.
The octagonal chessboard top is veneered in various contrasting wood types, with lighter and darker veneers creating a warm, graphic playing surface. The top rests on a faceted octagonal column, which rises from a tripod base terminating in softly rounded feet. This clear geometric logic, combined with restrained ornamentation, places the table within the late Biedermeier tradition, where elegance, symmetry, and craftsmanship were paramount.
The table has been professionally restored to a high standard, with great care taken to respect its originality. Small losses to the veneer have been sensitively completed, and the surface has been conserved rather than over-refinished, preserving the character and patina of the piece. The structure is perfectly stable and sturdy, making the table fully functional as well as decorative.
Comparable 19th-century octagonal chess pedestal tables appear only occasionally on the market; examples in this petite format are particularly hard to find. With its elegant silhouette, and sculptural quality, this piece offers a unique glimpse into 19th-century leisure and domestic culture.
The vintage wooden chess pieces shown in the photographs are included.
