Abstract Painting on Wooden Panel by Guus Sundermeijer-Rincker (1923 -2024), the Netherlands, 1987
A vibrant abstract artwork by the Dutch artist Guus Sundermeijer-Rincker. Painted on a wooden panel and set in a blackened wooden frame, the work has a strong modernist composition with lively blocks of colour, movement and structure.
Sundermeijer-Rincker is best known for her expressive figurative work, often modernist in spirit and increasingly abstracted in form. This fully abstract panel is therefore an interesting piece within her oeuvre. It shows another side of her artistic language: freer, more rhythmic, and almost architectural in its arrangement of colour and shape.
The painting has a striking decorative presence. The bright palette and graphic composition make it easy to place in both classic and contemporary interiors. It works beautifully as a lively accent above a sideboard, in a hallway, study, gallery wall or eclectic interior where it can bring colour without becoming too polite.
Guus Sundermeijer-Rincker studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and later became associated with the artists’ village of Nunspeet. She was part of the artistic circle around Jos Lussenburg and Jaap Hiddink and developed a distinctive modernist style, colourful, expressive and independent. In 2024, her work was celebrated in the exhibition Een kunstenaar van 100 jaar at Stadsmuseum Harderwijk. She passed away recently at the age of 101 years, on 26 November 2024.
This particular work came from the artist’s private collection and was acquired from the family.
The photographs were taken in different natural light conditions, some in afternoon sunlight and others in early morning light, which explains the slight variation in tone.
