Postmodern Table Lamp Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin Lighting, 1970s
A striking postmodern table lamp from the 1970s, with a design that appears clearly inspired by the architectural lighting of Frank Lloyd Wright, especially his famous Taliesin lamps. The piece has that same play between structure and atmosphere: a strict vertical frame, projecting rectangular shades and light that escapes through carefully placed openings.
The lamp is built around a tall black central stem, standing on a rectangular metal base. Three rectangular sheet-metal shades are placed at different heights, giving the lamp a sculptural, almost tower-like silhouette. The shades have a brushed metal exterior and warm light-coloured interiors, which create a beautiful contrast when the lamp is switched on.
Each shade has subtle cut-out decoration, allowing small lines of light to shine through the front and sides. Together with the silver-capped bulbs, this gives the lamp a very graphic effect: part lighting object, part miniature modernist building. It has a strong architectural presence without becoming heavy, and works beautifully on a sideboard, desk, pedestal or low cabinet.
The lamp is in good vintage condition, with minor signs of age and use, including some small scratches and light surface wear. It comes with the three silver-capped LED bulbs shown in the photographs. These bulbs are new and energy efficient.
