Product Details
A rare Art Deco teak side table with octagonal white marble inlay, hand crafted in the former Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) by a local carpenter during the late colonial period. Made of solid teak, and speaking the language of Dutch Art Deco/Amsterdam School, resulting in a unique and historically layered piece. It's well made, very sturdy and heavy and still holds the (very heavy) marble very well.
The table reflects the spirit of Indonesian/Dutch Art Deco - a distinctive interpretation of the international Art Deco style that emerged in the early 20th century.
In the design of this table one can see a synthesis of influences; the Dutch Art Deco / Amsterdam School architecture, with its scuptural forms and stylized ornament. Indonesian motifs and traditions, visible in the use of teak and the emphasis on handcrafted detailing around the tabletop. Material richness, combining a heavy marble top with locally sourced hardwood.
The marble inset top gives the table both visual refinement and functional durability, while the carved accents and stepped leg details root it firmly within the Amsterdam School idiom.
Indonesian Art Deco was more than a decorative style - it represented a dialogue between European modernism and Indonesian culture. Found in architecture, furniture, and design of the period, it remains an important symbol of cultural exchange and adaptation.
This piece is both beautiful and functional object, and also a tangible piece of design history - where international Art Deco ideals and Indonesian craftsmanship met to create a truly eclectic and timeless work of art.
