A rare and highly individual Dutch Art Deco table, firmly rooted in the expressive architectural language of the Amsterdam School.
The substantial circular top has a wonderful, animated grain bringing warmth, depth and movement. A broad rounded edge and deep circular apron give the upper section sculptural weight.
Four wide supports descend from the top, each crowned by a distinctive arrangement of three carved scrolls. These rhythmic, curling details are unmistakably Amsterdam School, introducing an ornamental counterpoint to the table’s heavier architectural construction. Broad, sweeping cut-outs open the structure beneath, while the supports continue into a thick circular lower tier.
The combination of monumentality and intricate detail is particularly successful. From a distance, the table reads as a strong architectural volume; viewed more closely, its carved scrolls, rounded profiles and dramatic veneer reveal a far more decorative character.
The Amsterdam School movement transformed furniture into a form of miniature architecture. Designers favoured expressive silhouettes, carefully articulated joinery and sculptural woodcarving. This table captures that sensibility beautifully, balancing imposing proportions with a surprising elegance.
Experlly restored and in very good condition. Only minor traces of age and use consistent with a piece from the 1920s.
