Product Details
A late 17th century walnut Flemish armchair, later reupholstery (ca 1850) in mid 19th century embossed, gilt and painted leather - possibly Spanish 'Cordoba'
A maximalist statement piece with undeniable presence. It would make a striking accent in an entrance hall, library, or layered contemporary interior.
The chair is constructed in solid walnut and stands on sculptural barley twist front legs terminating in bun feet. Of particular distinction are the double front stretchers, both executed in full barley twist and placed one above the other. This rare stacked configuration creates a dynamic visual rhythm across the façade while reinforcing the structural integrity of the frame. The rear legs are joined by a rectangular stretcher base, lending the chair a grounded, architectural stance.
The arms are supported by spiral turned uprights rising from block-form supports, the handholds ending in squared terminals with subtle scroll carving. The silhouette is compact yet powerful, with a slightly reclined rectangular back and deep seat.
The upholstery dates to approximately 1850 and consists of richly tooled and gilt leather with a geometric ground overlaid by exuberant floral motifs and scrolling foliage. The leather exhibits a deep, time-softened patina with an oversized nailhead trim securing the panels along the edges. The combination of 17th century walnut and 19th century Cordoba leather results in a richly layered object reflecting centuries of evolving taste.
The leather has been professionally restored and is structurally sound. It is sturdy, stable, and suitable for everyday use.
Comparable examples of this form have appeared at major international auctions. Notably, Sotheby’s offered “A near pair of Flemish walnut armchairs, 17th century,” sharing the same essential vocabulary with boldly turned barley twist arms and legs.
