Product Details
A striking Dutch Art Deco coffee table in oak, dating to the 1920s and very much in the manner of Hendrik Wouda (although not marked Pander or otherwise)
The heavy vertical supports, the honest oak construction and the absence of decorative excess all belong to the same world of Dutch modernist Art Deco. It has that Hague School preference for architecture over ornament: the interest is in the stance, the intervals, the repeated circle, and the way the wood itself becomes the decoration.
The design is built around a strong play of circular and vertical forms. A broad round top rests above a deep cylindrical apron, supported by rectangular oak uprights placed in a rhythmic arrangement. Beneath the top is a smaller circular lower tier, giving the table both practical a wonderful sense of structure.

There is a fine tension in the design. The table is built from bold, almost severe elements, yet it never becomes blunt. The circular top and lower tier give the piece a controlled softness, while the rectangular uprights provide the discipline. This dialogue between round and straight, plane and curve, makes it especially compatible with Wouda’s interiors, where furniture often feels less like movable objects and more like small pieces of architecture.

The oak has beautiful variations in woodgrain that catch the light. The wood gives depth and life to the composition, turning the surface itself into the ornament.
This table would work beautifully as a coffee table, centre table or strong side table in a seating area. It combines especially well with Wouda furniture, as shown in one of the photographs, but also with curved sofas, organic modern interiors or more clean-lined modernist pieces.
The table has been lightly restored with respect for its age and character. It is structurally solid and ready for use, with minor signs of age consistent with a well-kept piece from the 1920s.
