Product Details

A highly unusual pre-war high-back chair in black-painted wood and leather, with a radical presence. .

The chair belongs visually to the world of Dutch interwar avant-garde and 'De Stijl' furniture: severe, experimental, architectural, and more concerned with construction and idea than with comfort. The lower part of the chair strongly recalls the constructional language of Gerrit Rietveld’s later Crate furniture, with simple planks, exposed joints, direct assembly and a deliberate rejection of refined cabinetmaking. The high vertical back, black frame and suspended leather panels also bring it close to the atmosphere around Rietveld, Jo Uiterwaal and the wider De Stijl-adjacent experiments of the 1920s and 1930s.

A manifesto in wood, leather, bolts and attitude.

The frame is made in a very direct way from planks and square-section battens, finished in an old, thin black paint. The sides are built from stacked boards, while the cross members are held with square-headed bolts, making the construction simple, legible and partly demountable. The seat and back are formed from broad strips of brown leather, wrapped around the rails and fixed with nails and leather stitching. The leather has a beautiful aged surface, with natural irregularities, wear, scratches and a dry sculptural quality that suits the object exceptionally well.
An expert report confirms that the method of construction, signs of age and overall appearance confirm a pre-war production date. The report also notes clear influences from Rietveld’s and Uiterwaal's designs, including the leather seat, the side construction, the high back and the demountable character of the chair. The expert observes that the side construction strongly recalls Rietveld’s Crate furniture, while the use of leather also connects with early Rietveld furniture and with a chair design by Jo Uiterwaal. UIterwaal is known to have worked on some projects with Rietveld. The report does not firmly attribute the chair to Rietveld, Uiterwaal or another named designer, but it does place the piece in a very interesting pre-war modernist context.
This is exactly where the chair becomes fascinating. It may be by an unknown maker working under the influence of Rietveld, or it may represent a rare, experimental object from this progressive Dutch design climate. The report even raises the question of whether the chair could have been a forerunner of the Crate furniture of the mid-1930s.
We safely describe the chair as influenced by the design language of Rietveld and Uiterwaal, rather than as an attribution. No known archival source currently allows a firm attribution, but the affinities are strong enough to make this a serious and intriguing object for collectors of Dutch avant-garde furniture, De Stijl-related design, and early modernist experiment.
As a seat, the chair should be understood less as furniture for daily use than as a sculptural object with presence. It is a piece to place in a gallery, entrance hall, studio, collector’s interior or modernist setting, where it can function as a visual statement: a strict black frame, a suspended leather skin, and the unmistakable energy of Dutch experimental design before the Second World War.

Condition
Good, honest vintage condition with visible signs of age and use. The black-painted wooden frame shows wear, scratches, small losses and rubbing, especially to edges and corners. The construction is somewhat flexible; according to the report the chair has some sideways movement because the bolted rails do not give full rigidity. The leather seat and back are in reasonably good condition, with scratches, marks and normal wear. The seat may have been replaced or remounted at some point, as nail holes from an earlier fixing are visible.
A rare opportunity to acquire an evocative piece of early modernist Dutch design.
