Product Details
A rare Art Deco accent table by P.E.L. Izeren for De Genneper Molen, dating to around 1920 and bearing the original Genneper Molen paper label (stating model nr. 288) A wonderfully distinctive design: compact in scale, but full of character, tension and architectural intent.
Where Amsterdam School tables lean into a more overt expressiveness, this example moves in a slightly stricter and more geometric direction, with a language that feels closer to the modernist clarity associated with the Hague School and, by extension, the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright. The result is a piece that sits in that fascinating Dutch territory between sculptural decoration and disciplined structure.
The square top, with its softly rounded corners, rests above a strikingly composed base of intersecting planes and vertical elements. The construction is beautifully resolved: oak supports rise from a stepped cross-form base, while the solid macassar ebony uprights create sharp dark accents that animate the silhouette and lend the design a taut graphic rhythm.
A sturdy but elegant table, grounded yet open, with a silhouette that changes pleasingly from every angle. The stepped feet and strong verticals give it an architectural presence, while the top, broad and calm by comparison, acts as a visual counterweight. There is a clear sense of intelligence in the proportions.
Crafted in solid oak with macassar ebony detailing, the overall impression is one of strength, refinement and originality.
A particularly strong and documented example of early Dutch decorative modernism: sculptural, unusual, and highly usable, whether placed beside a chair, between seating, or simply allowed to stand on its own as a small but convincing accent table.
About the Designer
P.E.L. Izeren (1886–1943) designed numerous works for De Genneper Molen and remained with the firm into the late 1930s. Housed in a former watermill in Gennep, the company began as a sawmill before expanding around 1917 into the making of small furnishings - marketed in their catalogues as “supplementary furniture.” These refined tables, stands, and cabinets soon became the heart of their production, with Izeren’s distinctive sculptural designs among the most enduring contributions.
