Dutch Art Deco The Hague School Floor Lamp in Oak, 1920s

The lamp has a beautifully balanced modernist construction: a tall, square central stem rising from a four-part geometric base, with broad triangular supports that give the piece both stability and sculptural presence. Its strength lies in restraint. There is no ornament in the traditional sense; the decoration is in the rhythm of the planes, the warm grain of the oak and the way the base opens and closes around the centre.

Stylistically, the lamp sits very naturally within Dutch Art Deco and Haagse School interiors. The clear geometry also gives it a subtle affinity with De Stijl, though the warmth of the oak and the slightly monumental stance make it softer and more interior-minded than pure avant-garde abstraction.

The lamp has been lightly restored and stands stable and sturdy. It is fitted with a vintage linen shade, which rests on the original metal support attached to the top of the stem. The shade suits the lamp very well and gives it a calm, warm presence when lit.

A wonderful piece for a modernist interior, especially in combination with Dutch Art Deco, Haagse School or modernist furniture. As shown in the photographs, it pairs beautifully with architectural oak furniture, but it would also work very well in more brutalist, minimalist or eclectic curated interiors.
