Product Details
A distinctive Hague School cabinet in oak, combining compact proportions with a remarkably architectural composition. Its design language is closely related to the furniture produced by P.E.L. Izeren for the Genneper Molen, with strong horizontal and vertical planes, contrasting dark detailing and a carefully controlled asymmetry.
The cabinet stands on low black block feet, while black-finished edges trace the top, base and open shelving, sharpening its geometric silhouette. On the left, a tall glazed door opens to reveal the original deep-red stained interior, creating a rich and unexpected contrast with the warm oak. The door is fitted with a sculptural, stepped handle in coromandel.
The open section is arranged as an interplay of staggered horizontal shelves and offset vertical panels. Rather than following a conventional grid, the divisions shift between the upper and lower sections, giving the façade rhythm, depth and movement. The asymmetry is therefore present both in the cabinet as a whole and within the shelving itself.
Cabinets of this type were traditionally used as tea cabinets, with space for storing and displaying cups, saucers and other tea wares. Its modest size makes this example particularly versatile today: an expressive Dutch Art Deco accent piece that can serve as a drinks cabinet, display cabinet or compact bookcase.
The cabinet is in very good condition and has been lightly restored. One of the original red-stained shelves has developed a slight curve through the natural movement of the wood. This can be pressed back into a straight position upon request (within price)
