Product Details
This striking Dutch armchair from the 1920s reflects the calm architectural language of the Haagse School (The Hague School), a design movement that sought to translate the principles of modern architecture into furniture. Rather than relying on ornament, designers of this circle favored proportion, structure, and the expressive quality of well-crafted materials.
Executed in solid oak, the chair is composed with a clear sense of geometry and balance. The construction is deliberate and architectural: upright and pointed legs frame a suspended seat, while the backrest forms a tall vertical panel that continues downward toward the floor, visually anchoring the composition. This kind of extended back element is one of the characteristic design choices of the early Dutch modernists.
The other rather captivating feature is the double-layered and rounded armrest construction. Two parallel horizontal elements create a subtle rhythm of lines and a sense of softness in an otherwise very rationalist design.
The design vocabulary resonates strongly with furniture produced in the environment of Hague School architects and designers, such as Hendrik Wouda, Cor Alons, and Frits Spanjaard. These designers were influenced by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, whose design ideas found fertile ground in Dutch modernist circles. The disciplined geometry and structural clarity of this chair reflect that lineage in a convincing and thoughtful way.
While no documented archival example of this specific chair model has yet surfaced, the chair clearly belongs to the creative orbit of the Hague School workshops and designers active in the Netherlands during the 1920s.
Crafted in solid oak, the chair displays the warm tone and lively grain characteristic of the material. The seat retains a later vintage upholstery that complements the wood well and remains in good condition. Reupholstery can be arranged upon request.
With its compact footprint and sculptural presence, the chair functions beautifully as a desk chair, accent chair, or standalone architectural object within an interior. Pieces such as this illustrate how Dutch modernist furniture of the period sought not merely to furnish a room, but to participate in its architecture.
