Product Details
A modernist Dutch Art Deco pedestal from the 1920s, executed in solid oak with oak veneer and designed in the architectural spirit of the Haagse School (The Hague School). With its strong geometry, layered planes and carefully constructed proportions, the piece reads as a small architectural structure.
The pedestal is constructed from a robust solid oak corner frame rising from a cubic base, while the two display tiers are executed in thinner wood, creating a subtle contrast. The composition of vertical planes and projecting horizontal platforms reflects the architectural language associated with Dutch modernist architects and designers such as Hendrik Wouda and Frits Spanjaard, whose work was influenced by the spatial ideas of Frank Lloyd Wright.
The design is built around a strong architectural logic. When viewed from the front, with the points of the tiers aligned toward the viewer, the structure reads as perfectly balanced and symmetrical, anchored by the solid oak corner frame rising from the cubic base. Yet when the pedestal is placed in a corner or seen from the side, the projecting platforms reveal themselves as a carefully orchestrated asymmetrical composition. This dual reading gives the piece a dynamic quality that is characteristic of the architectural furniture produced in the circle of the Haagse School, where designers explored the tension between structural order and spatial movement.
The pedestal therefore functions not only as display furniture but also as a small architectural object, its stepped planes creating a subtle play of depth and shadow. A pedestal like this is hard to find and highly appreciated by both collectors and interior designers, as they provide an elegant display for sculpture, ceramics, or lighting, as well as being an architectural object in its own right.
The design is strongly reminiscent of experimental furniture produced within the circle of P.E.L. Izeren and the Genneper Molen workshops, where modernist compositions of intersecting planes and architectural forms were frequently explored during the 1920s. Pieces like this illustrate how Dutch designers translated architectural principles into furniture on a domestic scale.
Today, the pedestal integrates effortlessly into both historic Art Deco interiors and contemporary spaces. A rare and elegant example of Dutch modernist display furniture.
