Highly iconic and nowadays rare coffee table designed by Hendrik Wouda in 1924 and manufactured by H. Pander & Zonen. This is one of Wouda’s best-known table designs and is well documented in the literature on his work.
The design is pure Haagse School modernism: strict, square, rational and beautifully balanced. The table is built from strong rectangular volumes, with broad legs, a raised lower shelf and a framed top, The whole piece relies on proportion, rhythm and the natural figure of the oak. Ornament has been dismissed and replaced by structure and geometry, which is very Wouda. Very Frank Lloyd Wright too, whose modernist designs had a lot of influence on Wouda's development.
Wouda was head of design at H. Pander & Zonen and one of the most important Dutch furniture designers of the 1920s. His work belongs to the Hague School, a luxurious and modern design movement shaped by architecture, geometry and the idea that furniture should form an inseparable part of the interior. His designs show the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright, Berlage and De Stijl, but always with his own severe and unmistakable signature.
This table is a wonderfully compact statement piece. It has a solid, calm presence and works beautifully with other Hague School or Pander pieces, but also on its own in various interior styles and settings.
The table retains its original metal Pander & Zonen tag underneath.

Lightly restored. Good vintage condition with signs of age and use. There are small scratches, marks and minor chips along the edges and legs, consistent with age. The table is stable and presents very well.
