A generously sized Dutch Art Deco occasional table from the 1920s, made in solid oak with black-stained accents along the legs.
The design is architectural and strongly balanced. Each leg is positioned a quarter turn relative to the next, giving the table a clear rhythm from every angle. The open lower shelf adds depth to the construction and makes the piece practical as well as decorative. The dark vertical accents in the legs give the table a graphic quality.
The form is reminiscent of modernist tables made in the circle of L.O.V. Oosterbeek and the broader Haagse School movement, although the table is not marked. Its strength lies in the balance between sober construction, the contrasts and the vivid woodgrain.
The table is in very good lightly restored condition, with respect for the original character. The oak has a warm colour and a beautiful grain. The photos were taken in different kind of natural light (afternoon and sunset) to give a good impression of colour, surface and condition.
In the 1920s, a style of architecture and furniture design emerged in the Netherlands that would later become known as The Hague School, or Haagse School. More restrained than the expressive Amsterdam School and warmer than the strict abstraction of De Stijl, it is often described as Dutch Art Deco. Designers such as Piet Izeren, Hendrik Wouda and Cor Alons developed a modern interior language inspired partly by the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright: cubist, architectural, functional, but never without elegance.
