Product Details
A beautifully proportioned Dutch modernist armchair from the 1920s, executed in oak and upholstered in a deep burgundy. The piece has the strong architectural clarity associated with the Hague School as well as ''De Stijl": straight planes, block-like volumes, honest construction and a deliberate sense of rhythm.
The design is all about cubist geometry. The broad side panels, upright back posts, flat armrests and open lower structure give the chair a wonderfully balanced silhouette: solid and grounded, but not heavy. It has that rare quality of being sober and expressive at the same time.
The chair sits very naturally within the design language of Dutch interwar modernism, close in spirit to the work of Frits Spanjaard, Jan Wils and Piet Izeren; rational, structural, modern, with ornament replaced by proportion and stance.
Its simplicity makes it surprisingly easy to place. It works beautifully as an accent chair in an eclectic interior, beside both modern design and antiques.
The warm tone and patina of the oak works beautifully with the compact, cubic silhouette. A strong and characterful armchair that functions equally well as a standalone accent piece or as part of a carefully composed interior.
Condition is good, refinished woodwork and minor age-related wear consistent with a piece from the 1920s.
