Product Details
An early 20th-century credenza or sideboard by H. Pander & Zonen, the well-known Dutch furniture maker with workshops in The Hague, Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The piece is marked with the original H. Pander & Zonen metal plate inside the door and also carries the Pander stamp on the back.
This is a particularly interesting piece because it stands right on the threshold between two design worlds. There are still clear traces of the earlier Art Nouveau / Nieuwe Kunst sensibility: the softly rounded, organic door knobs, the warm decorative wood contrasts and the domestic elegance of the form. At the same time, the piece already speaks a much more modern language. The front is built up from strong rectangular planes, with a sober architectural rhythm in the doors, drawers, uprights and back gallery.
Especially striking are the rectangular slats and raised elements at the top, which already point towards the more rigorous design language later associated with Hendrik Wouda and the Hague School. The darker red-toned central panels in the doors also recall details known from documented Wouda designs for Pander. We cannot document this credenza as a Wouda design, and therefore do not attribute it as such, but it is certainly close to that early Pander world in which Dutch furniture was moving from decorative Art Nouveau towards modernist clarity.
The proportions are excellent: compact but substantial, practical but full of presence. The high back rail and side elements give the piece a slightly architectural silhouette, while the front remains calm and balanced. It would work beautifully in a dining room, but also as a statement piece in a hallway, for instance with a mirror or artwork above it.
The credenza has two upper drawers. One drawer still has its original green felt lining for cutlery; the other drawer is unlined. Behind the two lower doors is one storage shelf, consisting of two planks. The piece also comes with its original Pander key, which works for both the doors and the drawers.
The wood has a warm oak tone with contrasting red stained panels in the doors and macassar ebony handles. The credenza is very sturdy, stable and heavy, and has been lightly restored. Good antique condition with normal signs of age and use. Some small marks, wear and patina consistent with age.
