Dutch Art Deco Haagse School nightstand or cupboard by Cor Alons, ca. 1925
This rare and beautifully proportioned nightstand or small cupboard was designed in the mid-1920s by the renowned Dutch interior designer Cor Alons. The design is compact and architectural, with strong vertical legs, restrained blackened accents, and a striking oversized wooden doorknob. That generously scaled knob gives the piece an endearing, almost toy-like quality. The piece shows the straight lines amd also the playful character of early the Hague School furniture.
The cupboard dates from around 1925 when Cor Alons and Frits Spanjaard had teamed up as one interior architecture company, following Haagse School principles. They were visibly inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright.
The nightstand is in good condition considering its age and use, with a warm, even patina that enhances its character. It remains sturdy and fully functional, making it not only a collectible design object but also a charming accent piece ans still usable as an actual nightstand.
