Product Details
Dutch art deco modernist/Haagse School modestly sized side table from the 1920s. The base is symmetrically divided into 4 compartments and 4 shelves. The table looks different from each angle, as illustrated with the pictures. Made from solid mahogany (a mahogany type allowed for CITES) it is quite heavy and very stable. Condition is good with small signs of use considering its 100 years of age.
''Haagse School'' furniture manufacturing was centered in the city of The Hague with its rather affluent clientele.
In the 1920s, a style of architecture and furniture design emerged in The Hague that would become known as The Hague School. More sober than the imaginative Amsterdam School and more elegant and luxurious than De Stijl, this style is also called Dutch Art Deco.
After the First World War, young designers such as Henk Wouda, Cor Alons and J. Brunott developed their own modern design for the interior. They chose the work of the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright as the most important example. They combined their idiosyncratic preferences with the commercial requirements of the Hague furniture factories. The result was the now well-known Dutch 'Hague School' style with its straight and geometric, cubist lines and shapes.
