Product Details
A charming and decorative Amsterdam School side table with a stepped rhythm and some Mission-style influence. Black and dark brown paintwork on the top. The legs have black painted lines running down. The piece stands very stable and has a good weight. Hand crafted in solid oak with stepped details around the base and below the top; a round black painted top and a lower tier that giveshe piece a shape that is pleasing to the eye.
A perfect accent table that carries the architectural spirit of the 1920s into today. Usable as a display table but also very decorative on its own.
The table has not been completely refinished and has small signs of its time and scratches on the legs. The paintwork in the top has been lightly (and expertly) touched up.
The Amsterdam School (c.1910–1940) is where Dutch architecture went expressive - brick turning sculptural, craft pushed to the fore. It spilled beyond buildings into sculpture, furniture and even urban planning. Think bold, organic forms, lavish ornament, and obsessive workmanship. Some of the big names : Michel de Klerk, Piet Kramer, J.M. van der Meij and sculptor Hildo Krop. The movement thrives on paradox: communal ideals with fiercely individual expression; modern ambitions with a medieval wink; exuberant, imaginative, and sometimes delightfully bizarre. Today it remains one of the most recognizable and loved Dutch styles worldwide.
