Product Details
Original 1920s Amsterdam School batiked floorlamp, made by either Louis Bogtman or Hans Steinpatz.
The names of L. Bogtman and H. Steinpatz are often used interchangeably because their designs are so very similar. They both decorated objects in this very recognizable style, using batik (originally a fabric-dyeing technique) on wood. They are best known for handcrafting small utensils such as bookends, clocks and bowls. The larger object, like batiked pieces of furniture, floorlamps and chandeliers are quite rare and sought after.
The designs were clearly orientally inspired and they are now considered to be part of Amsterdam School movement.
''The Amsterdam School'' stands for the Dutch architectural movement that flourished between 1910 and 1940. The movement influenced other art forms such as sculpture, furniture design and urban planning. Some characteristics of the Amsterdam School include:
Expressionist and organic shapes, decorative sculptural elements and a focus on craftsmanship. The Amsterdam School movement is seen as a very important chapter in Dutch architectural history and to this day a very recognizable and beloved style worldwide.
