Product Details
A rare painted Amsterdam School wastepaper basket or plant pot, ca 1925. A modest object with lots of character.
The piece is made in wood and retains its original painted decoration, with a deep brown ground, muted green constructional elements and stylised Art Deco decoration in yellow, black and pale green-blue
The design has a strong little silhouette. It is not simply a painted box but the whole object has been given rhythm and structure. The corners, feet and rim are built up in layers, creating the kind of chunky, crafted presence often found in small Amsterdam School furniture and interior pieces from the 1920s.
The original paintwork is an important part of the appeal. It has not been restored and shows wear, rubbing and small losses to the edges. This gives the piece its authentic look. The colours have softened beautifully over time.
It can be used as a wastepaper basket in an office or purely as a decorative object. It would also work wonderfully with a plant placed inside. A piece like this brings the Amsterdam School into a room in a very natural way: as a highly individual object with charm, age and eccentricity.
Painted Amsterdam School pieces of this kind are increasingly rare and sought after by collectors, curators and interior designers. It is a small but memorable accent piece, with the ability to give a room a more collected, individual atmosphere. It combines beautifully with Dutch Art Deco furniture, but also with more modern interiors, where the graphic paintwork and unusual form add colour, rhythm and a wonderful handmade quality.About the Amsterdam School style
The Amsterdam School was the expressive Dutch design and architectural movement that flourished roughly between 1910 and 1930, with influence continuing into the 1930s. Although best known through architecture, the movement also shaped furniture, metalwork, sculpture, lighting, textiles and smaller interior objects.
Its language is instantly recognisable but not always easy to define. Amsterdam School design can be organic and geometric at the same time; modern yet influences from medieval times and orientalism. It often gives everyday objects a surprising amount of personality. A wastepaper basket, pedestal or lamp could become a small creature, full of stepped forms, sculptural details and decorative rhythm.
Important figures associated with the movement include Michel de Klerk, Piet Kramer, J.M. van der Meij and Hildo Krop. The style began in Amsterdam but spread throughout the Netherlands, where local workshops, craftsmen and decorators translated its expressive language into furniture and interior objects.
