Product Details
A striking Amsterdam School pendant lamp in stained glass, The Netherlands, circa 1925.
Executed in the expressive architectural language so characteristic of Dutch lighting from the 1920s through the 1940s, this pendant unfolds like a glowing crown suspended in space. The shade is constructed in leaded glass and divided into 24 radial sections, fanning outward in a dynamic composition.
Each segment alternates between warm amber glass and softly opaline white panels, the latter enriched with a hand-painted pattern (Dutch: gebrandschilderd patroon). The decoration consists of stylized scroll motifs and linear rays, kiln-fired onto the glass. When illuminated, these graphic elements sharpen and float, giving the lamp both ornament and structure.
The outer rim forms a continuous band in deep green glass, underscored by a narrow horizontal strip of vibrant orange. This chromatic layering frames the composition with a distinctly Amsterdam School palette, earthy yet saturated. At the lower register, the amber triangular panels converge into a radiant central corona, culminating in a dark finial that anchors the composition visually.
The metal framework, with its visible lead lines, reinforces the architectural rhythm. The pendant is suspended from three chains connected to a decorative ceiling canopy with subtle relief ornament. In the photographs, the lamp appears slightly unbalanced; this is due to its temporary presentation on a rail. When mounted directly to a fixed ceiling point, as intended, it hangs symmetrically and stable within an interior.
The effect when lit is enchanting. The opaline panels diffuse light softly, while the amber core creates a warm, almost ember-like glow. It is not merely illumination, but atmosphere.
Amsterdam School lighting of this quality, especially with intact hand-painted decoration and such a complete color scheme, is increasingly scarce. This example captures the movement’s synthesis of craft, symbolism and architectural presence.
