Product Details
Exceptional and rare sculptural Amsterdam School side table, executed in solid mahogany and dating from the early 1920s. This piece is a striking example of the architectural furniture language that defines the Amsterdam School movement, where mass, rhythm and craftsmanship converge in expressive form.
The table features a round, slightly beveled top resting on a powerful architectural base composed of four vertical, stepped supports. These uprights are rhythmically notched, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow that strongly recalls Amsterdam School brick façades and bridge architecture. The supports are joined by a cross-shaped stretcher, providing both visual tension and excellent structural stability.
The base stands on small ebonized ball feet, a detail frequently encountered in Amsterdam School furniture. The proportions are carefully balanced, with a compact footprint and a pronounced vertical presence.
The mahogany shows a rich, warm patina, beautifully emphasizing the depth and character of the wood. The table remains in very good vintage condition, with only minor traces of age and use consistent with its period, enhancing its authentic appearance.
A rare and expressive Amsterdam School table, suitable as a side table, occasional table or sculptural accent, equally at home in an eclectic interior or as part of a curated design collection.
About the Amsterdam School
The Amsterdam School movement emerged in the Netherlands in the 1910s–1940s, known for its expressive forms, solid craftsmanship, and sculptural approach to design. Furniture from this period often combines architectural strength with refined detailing, emphasizing honest materials and artisanal construction. This table is a fine example of that philosophy, where form and function are inseparable.

Amsterdam School architects designed a lot of exteriors and interiors in Amsterdam, but the style spreaded further all around the Netherlands. The Hague has its own variant, called The Hague School.
