Product Details
An exceptionally eye-catching Amsterdam School floor lamp by Winkelman & Van der Bijl, made around 1920 in copper and wrought iron.
Its generously proportioned domed shade is richly pierced with repeating scrolls and stylised leaf forms, arranged in a striking, symmetrical pattern. A broad ornamental band encircles the lower edge, while a small fluted cap crowns the dome. Behind the dark metalwork, a cream-coloured fabric lining extends into a softly gathered valance. When illuminated, the fabric takes on a deep golden glow, bringing the intricate openwork into sharp relief.
The slender stem provides an elegant counterpoint to the elaborate shade. Wrought-iron strips with undulating edges run along the central shaft, curling outwards at the top and just above the gently domed copper base. The warm brown tones of the copper contrast beautifully with the darker ironwork, giving the lamp depth and richness even when unlit.
There is something distinctly medieval about its silhouette: the domed canopy, scrolling metalwork and warm, lantern-like light suggest an object from an imagined castle interior. Yet its playful proportions and expressive ornament belong comfortably to the Amsterdam School, where craftsmanship and fantasy often met. The flowing decoration also recalls Art Nouveau, while the attention to materials and construction reflects the spirit of Arts & Crafts.
A lamp with considerable presence, it would make a particularly atmospheric addition to a sitting room, bedroom, library or reading corner. Against a contemporary backdrop, its intricate silhouette becomes all the more striking.
Winkelman & Van der Bijl was an Amsterdam workshop specialising in ornamental metalwork, closely associated with the Amsterdam School. Its commissions included lighting and decorative metalwork for the Scheepvaarthuis, alongside collaborations with architects and artists such as Piet Kramer and Hildo Krop. The workshop’s work united practical construction with imaginative ornament - a combination beautifully expressed in this floor lamp.
