Product Details
A rare and important Amsterdam School chandelier by Winkelman & Van der Bijl, crafted in the early to mid-1920s from bronze and copper.
The design is overwhelming; bronze shades embroidered with pierced ornamentation hang from finely worked chains and bronze strap fittings, their rhythmic openwork casting shifting patterns of light. Six bell-like lanterns orbit the central body, glowing with warmth, while a large alabaster bowl anchors the whole with a soft, diffused radiance.
There is a touch of medieval strangeness here—a fantastical, almost otherworldly quality that makes the chandelier feel less like a lamp and more like a lit vessel suspended in air. Its bold silhouette conjures an atmosphere of grandeur and ritual, turning everyday life into something enchanted.
This striking fixture channels the expressive aesthetics of the Amsterdam School movement, while weaving in threads of Art Nouveau’s organic flow and the Arts & Crafts devotion to craft.
It’s a museum-grade treasure, but one that dazzles most when placed out of context—imagine it as the crowning presence in a grand, high hallway.
About Winkelman & Van der Bijl
Founded around 1910, Winkelman & Van der Bijl quickly earned a reputation as masters of ornamental metalwork. By 1915, they were producing the exterior lamps and decorative details for Amsterdam’s landmark Scheepvaarthuis, a cornerstone of Amsterdam School architecture. Their workshop became a frequent collaborator with sculptor Hildo Krop and architects such as Piet Kramer and Adriaan Moen, contributing lighting, railings, and decorative ironwork to bridges, public buildings, and even the famed Gerzon fashion house on Spuistraat.
Through these commissions, Winkelman & Van der Bijl helped define the material language of the Amsterdam School—an aesthetic that fused craft, fantasy, and monumental form into an enduring vision of modern Dutch design.
