'Close Encounters' Space Age floorlamp by Kerst Koopman, Netherlands, 1980s
Bring a touch of space-age glamour into your home with this rare Close Encounter lamp. Kerst koopman made two versions of this lamp (tall and low), this being the lower model, designed in the 1980s. With its futuristic shapes - smooth lacquered wood cylinders topped by a glowing dome - it doubles as both a light source and a statement piece. The surface on the lowest cylinder can function as a small side table. The larger cylinder is hollow and was originally meant as a plant pot.
The possibilities with the different set ups are making it as functional as it is eye-catching. Its warm, atmospheric glow makes it perfect as a centerpiece in a room but it would also make a very unsual bedside table and light.
A true conversation starter — this lamp embodies the playful, futuristic spirit of the 1980s and will add personality to eclectic out of the box interiors
