Bossche School Dom Hans van der Laan table, 1960s
A vintage 1960s Bossche School table from the interior of the St. Vicentius church in Velp, Netherlands. This church, first built in the 10 th century is one of the oldest churches in the Netherlands and it has been altered and restorerd many times. It's even been one of the headquarters for the allied soldiers in WW2.
In the early 1960s, architect Jan Strik ( 1912 – 1992), one of the followers of the Bossche School principles, restored the church and added Bossche School furniture to the interior, including at least 2 of these Bossche School monastery tables (also see last picture)
The table has a very serene appearance, blends in perfectly with modern furniture but also with more vintage pieces. Because of its size it can serve many purposes - a large desk, a dining table, breakfast table or the center piece of a library or office. The two Bossche School benches match very nicely. They are available as well.
The table is in good vintage condition, structurally stable and sturdy. Paintwork in fair condition and unrestored to retain the original character. We can have the paint cosmetically restored (scratches and small scuffs) upon request.
Dom Hans van der Laan (1904 – 1991) was a Dutch Benedictine monk and architect. He was a leading figure in the Bossche School. His theories on numerical ratios in architecture, in particular regarding the plastic number , were very influential. Van der Laan was not interested in the dimensions of the spaces themselves, but in what the proportions of dimensions brought about in humans
