Product Details

A modernist Bauhaus period floor lamp dating from the 1920s–1930s, combining a slender nickel-plated steel frame with its original shade, still retaining the original pleated fabric. Its appeal lies in the balance between the clean lines of the metalwork and the softness of the textile: an architectural silhouette with a distinctly warm presence.

Rising from a gently domed circular base, the tubular stem curves into a horizontal arm from which the conical shade is suspended. The height can be adjusted using the knurled locking collar on the stem, while a pivot joint allows the shade to be tilted to direct the light. Both adjustment mechanisms are in perfect working order. A cylindrical metal housing and flared collar provide a particularly well-resolved transition between the narrow arm and the broad fabric shade.
The surviving textile is an especially attractive feature. Its fine gathers, visible weave and delicate edging bring texture to the lamp’s restrained geometry. When illuminated, the fabric takes on a warm tone, while the nickel-plated surfaces catch the surrounding light. The light patina of the metal and the mellowed fabric give the piece a character that would be lost with a newly made shade.
The design reflects the functional approach of the Bauhaus and the wider European modernist movement. Founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar in 1919, the Bauhaus sought to bring art, craftsmanship and, increasingly, industrial production into closer relationship. Everyday objects became opportunities to explore proportion, materials and practical use. Its metal workshops helped establish lighting as an important field of modern design, favouring clear construction and geometric forms. Although the school closed in 1933, its ideas continued to shape interiors far beyond Germany.
Here, that modernist vocabulary takes up little visual space, while the generous shade creates a welcoming pool of light beside an armchair, sofa or reading corner. Its adjustable height and shade angle make it a versatile reading light, equally at home among period furnishings or in a contemporary interior.
The lamp retains its original wiring and is in good working order. The lightswitch on the foot is not wired but easily reinstalled by an electrician.
