A rare antique octagonal chess table and a vintage chess set

An exceptionally elegant 19th-century chess table, most likely English and dating from around 1870, complete with a vintage (mid century) red and natural bone chess set.

The table has a beautifully balanced and sophisticated design. Its octagonal top incorporates a finely veneered chessboard, with dark squares contrasting against richly figured golden-toned lighter wood. The natural grain of the wood is very decorative and an important part of the design.

The substantial top is supported by a tall faceted central pedestal, set into a moulded collar and terminating in an elegant four-part base. Each of the four feet curves gently, creating a particularly graceful silhouette, while the rounded feet give the table a subtle sense of lightness. The restrained ornamentation and beautifully considered proportions make it decorative without ever becoming overly formal.

Chess tables of this quality and form have become increasingly difficult to find, particularly examples that retain such a refined appearance and work equally well as a piece of furniture in their own right.

The precise origin is not documented. The table may be English or German, although its construction and overall character lead us to believe that a British origin is most likely. The table has been expertly restored and is in very good condition, retaining the warmth and character expected of a piece of this age.

Included is a complete vintage chess set in red-dyed and natural bone, dating from approximately the mid-20th century. Although the set is not original to the table, the scale, colour and character make it a particularly attractive match.

Together, the dark polished wood, golden chessboard and vivid red and ivory-toned pieces create a wonderfully rich composition. Both functional and highly decorative, it is a rare piece with a distinctly elegant presence.
